Links from other websites pointing to your site. Backlinks signal authority to Google: the more (and higher-quality) sites link to you, the more credible you appear.

Quality of backlinks matters much more than quantity. One link from BlogTO or the Toronto Star is worth more than thousands of links from low-quality directories. Earning backlinks naturally through original content, press coverage, and industry contribution is sustainable; buying them creates penalty risk.
